Big Brothers/Big Sisters

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to help children reach their potential through one-to-one relationships with mentors who have a measurable positive impact. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBS) was founded in 1904 and is the nation's largest mentoring network, currently with over 400 active programs in the US. BBBS of Western North Carolina was founded in 1982 and now serves 700 children in 8 counties. BBBS matches adult volunteers with children ages 6 through 18.

BBBS of Cherokee County officially became a branch of BBBS of WNC June 8, 2010. The advisory council includes school leaders, church leaders, children's advocates, and Sheriff's Department representatives. We have 20 adult menors matched with 20 "at risk" children referred by Murphy Elementary staff. Mentors meet for 1 hour per week at Murphy Elementary School and commit to 1 year of service. "Bigs" help with homework, play games, make crafts, share life stories, and have fun with their "Littles" with the objective to improve student's academic performance, classroom behavior, and attitude while instilling lasting values and nprinciples for living.
